Notes for 22nd July 2011
DVD Night -
Travel and Landscape Photography

On Friday 22nd July we held a DVD night, the theme was Travel and Landscape Photography, the night was a great success and everyone got something from it which was relevant to Sunday’s trip to Newcastle and surrounding area. Some things which we picked up on was the use of filters for long shutter speeds when photographing in areas where tourists gather, the longer the shutter speed the more the tourists disappear and also planning the shots out in advance getting information from the www, magazines, tourist maps and travel books. One landscape photographer on the DVD said that he would plan his trip sometimes years in advance so that all the factors of a great photograph come into effect.

Sunday’s trip to Newcastle was excellent and as usual there was advice in abundance from the more experienced photographers who help make a good day even better and thanks has to go to them for all their help. The weather was great and the location was fantastic, we arrived in Donard Park for approx 11.00am and made our way up through the trees with the hope of getting as far as we could, if you were looking for a waterfall then that is the place to go, everyone had opportunities to bag fantastic photographs and hopefully a return visit later in the year will be planned. For all that turned up thanks has to go to everyone but more so to the wives who waited patiently throughout the day.

For your diary:

The club will be holding 2 exhibitions the first in Comber Library on the 1st August until the 27th August, there is going to be a great selection of prints in both colour and black and white so please plan to come along and our second exhibition is in Dundonald Library 1st to 30th September.

On Friday 2nd September the club resumes it Friday nights and this year programme is excellent with plenty to keep you out of trouble. In the next few weeks we hope to be having one or two more trips so please watch the web site for more details. www.ardscameraclub.co.uk

Notes for July 2011

On Friday 22nd July there will be a DVD night entitled “Travel and Landscape Photography” kicking off at 8.00pm in the clubrooms and everyone is welcome to attend, you will learn something new and as this is the season for snapping you ought to plan to be there.

On Sunday 24th July we will be meeting at the clubrooms for 10.00am to put into practice what you learnt on Friday evening. The destination for the trip is Newcastle and the surrounding area, the weather is not yet booked so waterproofs, warm clothing, flask and sandwiches are required. As usual there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get the right answers, so no excuses for not getting good photos.

For your diary:

On 1-27 August the club will be holding an exhibition in Comber Library and also on 1-30 September in Dundonald Library. There will be a good selection of prints catering for every taste so plan to attend.

Notes for 26th June 2011

On Sunday 26th June we had our second field trip and as promised the weather booked was fantastic. We met at the Club Rooms and made our way to Portmuck about 10.30 ish, on the way up there we stopped off at the Railway Preservation Society for a brief look around and the staff couldn’t be more helpful showing us what is involved in looking after such impressive beasts.

We arrived at Portmuck for around 1.00pm, Portmuck is a great little harbour with stunning views and judging by the visitors there it seems that it is also a fine place to fish as well. After a few hours we headed off for ice creams and as the weather was so fine we did not need much to persuade us of the benefits.

Our last destination was a small village called Gleno, if you haven’t been there before it is well worth a visit, our purpose was to photograph the waterfall there, the word stunning is an understatement, what it looks like in the winter must border on awesome and for many of us this was the highlight of the day.

Due to the holidays the field trips will be taking a little rest but they will resume on Sunday 24th July, the weather has been booked and the location is Newcastle and surrounding areas. The day was a great success which everyone enjoyed, Leslie provided tuition and coaching for those of us who needed a gentle push in the right direction and everyone enjoyed the chance to mingle, get suntanned and strengthen friendships.

Notes for 17th June 2011

On Friday 17th June we had our first field trip to Helens Bay/ Crawfordsburn armed with cameras and waterproofs, the weather had been pretty poor all day and when we met up it looked as if it wasn’t going to change, but we were determined to have a good night regardless. Due to the fact the sky consisted of grey tones for clouds we all shot at anything but the sky, thankfully we were blessed with plenty to photograph. Helens Bay and Crawfordsburn have some fantastic photographic opportunities, the area has wildlife in abundance and we were treated to watching several families of ducks/ geese with their young ones, amazingly we got to within 2 metres of the young and got off lots of shots, so about 9.30pm we decided to call it a night and as we were walking back to the cars we just caught a glimpse of a vole type mammal rushing across our path. When we got to Helens Bay we encountered the makings of a wonderful sunset. So the moral of the night was get out regardless of the weather.

This Sunday 26th June we are meeting at the club rooms for 10.00am sharp. The location is Portmuck a hidden gem at the north eastern tip of Island Magee, Portmuck is a stunning little harbour. The National Trust own and manage coast on either side of the harbour and have provided excellent trails for visitors to enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and dramatic views. So what do you need to bring? Camera, tripod, full batteries and empty memory cards, warm, dry, waterproof clothing sandwiches and flask of tea/ coffee. Having checked on the internet if you love landscapes and wildlife this is a trip you want to be on. So if you have a camera and want a great day out come along, if you need transport just show up as there is bound to be room with someone and we are a pretty friendly lot. Remember you don’t need expensive equipment to have a winning picture just a love of taking pictures.

The Club is situated at the Junction of South Street / Comber Road and Circular Road, opposite the Charles Hurst 'Renault' garage and next to the Gateway Club. For more details about us visit our website at www.ardscameraclub.co.uk and any enquiries to ardscameraclub@yahoo.co.uk See you Sunday p.s. more trips in the pipeline keep watching here.

Notes for June 2011

This Friday 17th June is the first of many trips out. The venue is Helens Bay/ Crawfordsburn Country Park, timing is 7.30pm, meeting at the car park Helens Bay. As you can expect our weather to be unpredictable please bring waterproof clothing as well as your camera. Our second trip will be an all day event up at Port Muck, this will be a day to remember and the good weather is booked more about this next week.

The annual exhibition is still on in the Newtownards Town Hall, the quality of work is fantastic, the club wishes to thank all those involved in making it the best so far. Special thanks must go to the staff and our Judge Mr Jim Mooreland FRPS FBIPP.

Notes for 6th May 2011 - John Taggart
and 13th May 2011 - Denis Brady and Arthur Girvan

Ards Camera Club was host to John Taggart, award winning professional photographer from Antrim on Friday 6th May 2011. He is a wedding photographer but the talk was on his landscape photos with a quick run through his portraits. John showed us just how stunning landscape photos could be, especially the black and white photos. The portraits were fun and quirky. The feedback from the audience was it was one of the best nights of the season.

On Friday 13th May 2011, we had the double pleasure of two speakers, Denis Brady and Arthur Girvan, both professional wedding photographers. Denis showed us his landscape photos taken mostly locally around Carlingford and Mourne area. Arthur does the manipulation on the photos, which left Denis free to just take the photos. In the second half, Arthur showed us how he put images together, maybe compositing three or four photos for the final image. It was a very interesting night, showing it is possible to get stunning landscape photos right here in Northern Ireland. The talks also showed the power of Photoshop, and manipulation, taking further the debate of whether removal of items is cheating or not. The packed clubroom showed their appreciation for our two speakers.

He showed photos from his days with the Mirror Group, featuring many famous faces, including four presidents, various members of the Royal family, local sports personalities as well as newsworthy photos from our 'Troubles'.

One of the favourite photos was of Paddy Gillespie, a man who made a bicycle from a bedstead. He dressed up in a long coat with bowler hat and 'became' Charlie Chaplin for the photo. A lot of stories accompanied these photos, which made them all the more entertaining. It is always a pleasure to see prints, especially ones as good as these. The Club would like to thank Stanley and his wife, Maureen for bringing the prints and giving the talk.

Jim Crone - Fashion Photography

On Friday 18th February 2011, Ards Camera Club welcomed Jim Crone, well respected and renowned fashion photographer, for the second time this season. The first half of the evening Jim showed examples of his work, and how the same models were used for different hairstyles within the one photo shoot. His clients were household names and so he has been very creative with each shoot. This came across in the slideshow. There were before and after photos of the models, showing the transformation via a team which included: stylist, hairdresser, and makeup artist.

In the second half of the night, Jim set up the studio lighting and showed us how to create photos using different backgrounds and techniques. Afterwards the members were given a chance to use the setup. The model, Zandra, was very patient.

The Club would like to thank Jim for giving the talk and demonstration as well as our model for the night, Zandra, for coming down to the studio.

Notes for 11th February 2011
AIPF Panel - Stanley McIlreavey

Ards Camera Club welcomed Stanley McIlreavy, on Friday 11th February 2011. Stanley is a past president of Northern Ireland Photographic Association (NIPA) and a keen camera club member, formerly in Bangor and now currently in Carrickfergus. Stanley started off the night with showing us what can be done in the darkroom, using various tints and techniques. His love of using 'different' ideas continued when he went digital and he showed how different applied emulsions could be used to good effect as well as how craft paper gave very different, and pleasing results.

After a break, to look at his prints, Stanley showed us the panel for his letters, Associate of Irish Photographic Federation (AIPF). The audience was as always appreciative of prints that could be seen and handled. The panel showed what could be done with some effort and forethought. The panel was chosen from a batch taken over two days at Carrickfergus, where a historical re-enactment had taken place. Stanley explained that the process of putting the panel together took several trips to friends who gave constructive advice, to get the final choice and order before entering the panel. It was a very entertaining night as Stanley had some humourous stories to tell as well good humoured banter with members.

The Club would like to thank Stanley and his wife, Kate, for coming down and for bringing his photographs. It was greatly appreciated by all.

Notes for 4th February 2011
Rally Photography - Graham Chambers

Ards Camera Club welcomed Graham Chambers on Friday 4th February 2011. Graham has a full time job and rally photography is his hobby. He is so passionate about his photography that he uses his holidays and free time to photograph rallies in various countries. Graham showed us photos from the UK and Ireland rallies and then onto rallies in Portugal and Spain.

There was an amazing difference in the light for Spain and Portugal which made the colours very vibrant but had an added hazard. The cars threw up dust clouds as they spun round corners but the dust clouds had rocks in them that hit the camera equipment. It looked precarious where the shots were taken from but Graham assured us he was quite safe. The action shots definitely had the 'wow' factor and it was a packed room for the show.

The audience which packed the room were very enthusiastic about the talk and showed their appreciation. Ards Camera Club would like to thank Graham for giving the talk and feel privileged as this was the first time Graham has given a talk to a club.

Dates for your Diary:

Friday 11th February 2011 - Stanley McIlreavey will give a talk on his panel which gave him his letters. NB: This is a change to the programme.

Wednesday 16th February 2011 - Photochat and Problem Solving from 8 pm. Refreshments provided.

Friday 18th February 2011 - 'Fashion Photography' by Jim Crone, (please bring your camera.)

Please note the Club Storeroom currently holds a lot of old photos belonging to previous and current members of the club. The Club would be grateful if you would come and collect your photos by Friday 25th February 2011.

This Friday Stanley McIlreavey will give a talk on his panel which gained him his Irish letters. Letters are the standard for which a lot of us are aiming and are delighted Stanley can come along to give us the benefit of his experience and considerable skill. It promises to be an entertaining night. Please come along for a good night's entertainment. Further information is available on our website, www.ardscameraclub.co.uk, and our email is ardscameraclub@yahoo.co.uk.

Our model, Sophie, was very patient, smiling the entire night while everyone had their turn. This was a welcome chance to put Gordon Johnston's tips from last week of using only one studio light and a reflector into practice. Practical nights are always extremely popular and the feedback was everyone really enjoyed the night. Notes for 26 November 2010
Linda Salem - Weddings, Portraits and Italy

On 26th November 2010, Ards Camera Club welcomed Linda Salem, awarding winning local photographer, specialising in weddings. Linda showed slideshows of some of the wedding photos. Her style was described as classic with a modern twist. Linda really landed on her feet when she acquired a studio in a property that has amazing grounds. These are used for the majority of her outdoor shots with nearby weddings. Linda also does portraits, such as family groups and graduations as she has all the gowns. It was interesting to note that Linda does not use flash but only uses available light to produce stunning photos.

The second half was a slideshow of her trips to Italy. As Linda speaks the language, she tends to go to out of the way places, to get a taste of the real Italy. These photos were beautiful scenes of Italian country and culture. Her trips to Italy are just a hobby and not taken too seriously, with a lot of stunning photos taken on a digital compact. The room, although half full, was appreciative of Linda's work.

Linda set a quiz at tea break, leaving three prints on the board, two of which were digital and one film. The task was to pick out the one that was film. Of those who tried, no-one was correct at spotting the print from film. This was a true compliment to Linda's skills as well as the quality of prints.

Ards Camera Club would like to thank Linda for coming down to give the talk, especially in such bad weather conditions. Everyone really enjoyed the night as Linda is a very entertaining speaker.

Notes for 12 November 2010
Men's Night

On Friday 12th November 2010, Ards Camera Club welcomed six gentlemen speakers for their 'Men's Night'. The Chairman introduced the first speaker, Peter Brown whose first slide show was 'A Trip to Thailand'. This portrayed the wonderful, vibrant colours of the country as well as of the temples. It also included a sombre look at the bridge over the River Kwai and ended on a high note, with photos of the traditional transport, elephants. The second show was 'Belfast 2002', showing various familiar scenes around the city ending with a spectacular night scene. The next two shows were produced by Ards Audio-Visual Group.

After the ballot and refreshments, Bobby Graham showed wildlife photos by his son Robert. Some were taken on safari in Africa, some taken on the Isle of Mull and others such as fox cubs were taken nearer home. A few of the most memorable ones were those of a family of lion cubs. Next to speak was Ian McCormick, who whilst “trapped for a few days in Paris”, managed to take some great photos showing the characters in the city. These photos were mainly of artists and musicians, captured in black and white. The final speaker, William Stockdale, explained how he set up photos on his back kitchen table at the last minute, using things to hand and gave the stories behind a few of the photos which had been entered in competitions.

The audience enjoyed the night and showed their appreciation. The club would like to thank all the speakers for giving of their time to do the talks.

Notes for 29 October 2010
Ray Elwood - The art of story telling is what you leave out

Ards Camera Club welcomed its first artist in many years, the local and well respected Ray Elwood on Friday 29th October 2010. Ray is internationally known and has exhibited his paintings around the world. Ray started off with an introduction of how he built up any painting from photos with a brief overview of composition and light with reference to some of the great painters such as Turner and Michelangelo.

After a break for tea and the ballot, he gave a practical demonstration, showing how the painting is built up from scratch with 'blocking in' to the next level. It was not finished on the night but was fascinating to watch how the painting came together from a few blue lines, to a mountain scene with a cloudy sky, path and walkers with backpacks. It became very clear that the artist and photographer had so much more in common than perhaps was realised. Ray also promised to come back to show us the finished painting.

Ards Camera Club would like to thank Ray for coming along and bringing all his gear to give the talk and demo. It was very appreciated by a capacity audience.

An apology for the mistake in last week's article. The judge from last week's competition was John Belshaw from Shorts Camera Club, and not from Bangor Camera Club as stated in last week's post.

Dates for your Diary:

Friday 5th November 2010 - 'My Line of Work' by Bradley Quinn, Wedding Photographer and Tour Photography for Snow Patrol.

Wednesday 10th November 2010 - 'Photochat and Problem Solving' from 8 pm at Clubrooms, refreshments provided.

Friday 12th November 'Men's Night' - a selection of gentlemen club members will speak about their photos.

Bradley Quinn is a well respected wedding and commercial photographer as well as tour photographer for Snow Patrol. His latest wedding shots are on Facebook and make very enjoyable viewing. The talk should be an interesting night showing a mixture of his work. Please join us for a good night of craic and entertainment. Further information is available on our website, www.ardscameraclub.co.uk, and our email is ardscameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

John Hooton - Gathering Light

Ards Camera Club welcomed John Hooton FIPF EFIAP FRPS MFIAP on Friday 8th October 2010 in the Townhall. John is a well respected and internationally known land and seascape photographer. He talked about the 'chocolate box' photos and then onto the dark moody photos. Then a change of style to light and airy, where long exposures were used on seascapes. The current style was much lighter and very minimalist with one focal point and almost nothing else in the image apart from the right light. The images were very striking and the total opposite to the dark and broody ones from years before. It was only in the last 12 months that John switched from film to digital images.

John spoke to a packed room and a video link brought the prints to life for those at the back of the room. The audience especially appreciated being able to see the prints close up as they were handed round the room. The amazing and award winning images provided inspiration for what could be achieved if the mind was set to it.

John Hanvey - Jenin to Gaza

On Friday 1st October 2010, Ards Camera Club welcomed John Hanvey, Chairman of Christian Brothers Past Pupils Union Camera Club (CBPPUCC). He had his first exhibition in Belfast and we were delighted to be the first camera club to book him to talk about his images.

The exhibition is entitled 'Jenin to Gaza 2002'. The images of the war torn region were very sobering. As John put it, when on holiday most people look for the swimming pool, he looked for the bullet-proof jacket. There were images of Jenin with the houses in rubble and yet people were living in them. At a border checkpoint to Gaza the Palestinian men were allowed to cross over to work on the farms but not allowed to bring food back. One particular image was of the skip that held the food and the women then retrieved the food.

These images were on a Sony 2 megapixel compact camera and a 1 Gigabyte card. John also took 2 rolls of black and white film. These gave him a second panel. The black and white suited the subject matter, showing the starkness of the ruins and the bleakness of the situation.

Ards Camera Club would like to thank John for taking the time to come down and for giving the talk. It is always good to see prints especially those made from negatives and was appreciated by the audience.

A packed clubroom sat enthralled as Judy described her trips through these countries. Then onto photos of landmarks at home in Belfast, finishing with a look at some of Judy's favourite images. Some were taken in old houses and others were composites of various photos. One in particular taken in Venice was a very striking image and had done well in salons. Notes for 10 September 2010
Sinclair Adair - A Has-been, Once upon a time

Ards Camera Club were delighted to welcome our very own David Sinclair Adair (Sinclair). There is always an expectation of something different and entertaining from Sinclair, and he did not disappoint the large crowd. Sinclair showed a number of short presentations of images set to music. Some were humorous like one entitled 'Belfast Zoo' while some were a little more sobering like the 'Holland Drive'. The music chosen was excellent and at one point had a lot of members singing along. The last presentation was a collection of photos taken over the years of members past and present, set to 'We'll meet again' and provided members with the fun of trying to identify people from years gone by.

The Club would like to thank Sinclair for coming along especially as he had made a special effort due to his health. It was an extremely enjoyable and entertaining night.

Next Friday 17th September 2010 is Judy Boyle, FRPS, who will be giving a talk on her images. Judy started photography 20 years ago and her only regret is she is not start sooner. She started off in traditional film especially infra-red, then graduated to digital techniques. Judy does lecture tours for the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) including one in November which includes Scotland and Wales as well as being on the RPS judging panel for the Edinburgh Salon. Please come along to what is going to be a very good night as Judy is an excellent speaker as her passion and enthusiasm is still clearly evident after all these years as well as viewing her awe inspiring images.

Dates for your Diary:

Friday 17th September 2010 - 'Judy's Journeys' by Judy Boyle FRPS

Wednesday 22nd September 2010 - Photochat and Problem Solving resumes, at 8 pm in Clubrooms. Tea and biscuits provided.

Friday 24th September 2010 - Inter-Club competition Round 1 - Open
